Science Olympiad is an extracurricular activity that brings STEM's different aspects to life through team-based competitions and events. These competitions combine the various sciences, such as earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, and sometimes even computer science. Participants must test their knowledge in the varied fields through labs, written tests, and other challenges. Science Olympiad provides students with a wide range of opportunities to choose from and to strengthen their different abilities.
The club’s structure varies based on different age groups. At the K-6 levels, there is the elementary Science Olympiad which can be a competitive event, a Science Fun day, or an expert-filled Science Olympiad night. From grades 6-12, the club becomes more of an official team with year-long preparations for the competitions. Each of the school teams selects 15 members to train and compete in the various events, however, the school team may have more members who can still be a part of the learning journey without competing. The competitions consist of 23 teams in each of the divisions (middle school, high school). Every year the topics are rotated to mirror the ever-changing nature of science.
The Science Olympiad is different than regular school clubs since the members must prepare throughout the year. The commitment may vary between each school, in general students may meet every week and prepare for the competition. The club has until April to review and learn all the material. The content for the events, for high school, goes from the honors level to Advanced Placement, hence the amount spent towards the club will also depend on how much prior knowledge the members have. It is also common for teams to meet more often as the competition date approaches closer.
To start this club, finding a teacher would be the first step, preferably a science teacher that can help. The next step would be to register the team through the Science Olympiad website, this requires a registration fee. Therefore, fundraising is also a crucial part of starting the club, this may need to be done throughout the year to cover the material and event costs as well. Lastly, once all the initial foundation is in place you can start recruiting members and begin preparing for the event with the given material and syllabus on the website.
Science Olympiad is a great way to pursue STEM subjects more deeply with hands-on activities, classroom learning, and competitive events. It also enhances teamwork, leadership skills, and communication skills. For those considering STEM as a career, the Science Olympiad provides great experiences that can also lead to scholarships. Overall the Science Olympiad is a great way to prepare for different STEM opportunities beyond the classroom settings. It allows students to develop crucial skills that will help them stand out from others and give them an advantage.
