Why is it Important to Study Both Physical and Theoretical Science?

Studying both physical and theoretical science is crucial for gaining an understanding of concepts relating to space, time, and the nature of the universe. With the combined expansion of physical and theoretical education and research, we increase humanity's knowledge of the world around us.


Physical science includes physics, astronomy, chemistry, and Earth sciences. It is the foundation for exploring the forces that created, and continue to influence the developments in our universe. Physical science is made up of concepts discovered using the scientific method. It provides insights into the behavior of matter, energy, and natural forces. With this knowledge is how technological advancements. For example, our phones use sensor technologies, transistors, and satellites that are only possible due to physical science. So, even if you aren't planning to pursue a field relating directly to physical science, it will continue to impact various aspects of your daily life. From the principles of physics which encompass everything from the movements of celestial objects to quantum mechanics, and gravity, to the studies of chemistry, astronomy, and Earth science, an understanding of physical science enhances your ability to interpret the world around you and make informed judgments.


However, comprehension of physical science would not be so intertwined with our world if it were not for the first theoretical science. Theoretical science focuses on the development of new ideas, which is important, as every idea we consider to be a fact today was once a new idea. Theoretical physics pushes the boundaries of what we know as a species and paves the way for innovation. Technological innovation which heavily impacts the world's economy, directly demonstrates the relationship between theoretical and applied sciences. Advancements in electromagnetism and quantum theory have allowed for the creation of electric power grids and wireless communication. By expanding the appreciation for theoretical science, we are able to imagine the future of physical science and technology.


The importance of studying both physical and theoretical science lies in the transition between understanding foundational principles and the development of cutting-edge technology. Physical science provides the groundwork, it is the culmination of hundreds of years of scientific research and it offers essential laws and concepts that we learn in school to provide essential knowledge everyone can bring into their adult lives. However, with this foundation, we can then foster the pursuit of knowledge and fill in the missing pieces in our understanding of the universe, which brings us to the importance of theoretical science. Theoretical science propels technological innovation and expands the boundaries of what is known. Together these two branches of science represent the process through which humanity has answered questions about the world around us.
